Emotional Intelligence and Acceptance
A critical first step in developing the ability to deal with differences is self-awareness in order to understand our reactions to others. This ongoing process involves reaching and maintaining a
comfort with one’s own identity, including an understanding of one’s values, passions, preferences,
and worldview. This introspection also involves becoming conscious of the biases, assumptions, and hot buttons that influence one’s attitudes toward others. Awareness precedes choice and change.Self understanding helps one to predict behavior through knowing what evokes a particular emotional reaction and behavioral response. This insight is fundamental to managing emotional reactions and behavior toward others.

The Greatest example of high (IQ) and low/ or no (EQ)
Kaczynski's slide from promise to prison might be the most extreme of all. An intellectual prodigy, he was accepted to Harvard when he was just 16. He earned a Ph.D. in mathematics from the University of Michigan and he was teaching at U.C.-Berkeley when he was just 25.

  1. self-awareness is truly a difficut task, but then we must extend from self-awareness to break habits that could be distructive to ourselves or others. For example, I personally have been working on being self aware of running a negative and judgmental "record" about myself. being aware of this record and then attempting to actively disrupt the record is so hard. I wonder if Kaczynski was ever aware of his own records? Not likely.

  2. Rebecca this is amazing in the way you put this. When I was going through a counseling session, I referred to someone as possibly, being mentally ill, and the Psychologist said, "The person is not mentally ill but unaccountable from such a young age." I know the level of degree's are sequential, and I am proud to almost have my BA, but I am so amazed at the minds of people who have a PhD. and to have the emotional intelligence also is such a blessing. I really like way you keep reminding us of the meanings of the word,"record"..I am really enjoying your class:) thanks, Sandy
